Debbie’s Addiction

My friend Debbie has had serious issues with drug and alcohol addiction. Debbie, had begun drinking when she was 13 to impress some of her friends at a party. She thought that it would be fun to prove how grown up she was to all of her friends by drinking so much that she had to be rushed to the hospital to have her stomach pumped.
Her mom and dad punished her by taking away her TV and phone privileges but that didn’t make Debbie change any, the next party she went to she smoked Pot and drank.

Debbie did the whole teen age rebellion thing. Her parents were divorcing and she used drugs as a way to cope with it all. She began getting into a lot of fights at school, and her grades began to drop, and people started calling her ‘Brown Bag”  because she always had a 40 oz beer or other liquor. I remember clearly graduation night, she went out to a party with her friends to celebrate, and tried meth for the first time. She wasn’t the same after that.

She began living in flop houses, and selling herself for that next fix. Debbie never stayed in the rehab centers. And over the course of a year and a half I got word that she was in jail on prostitution charges.

Atlanta is a large city with many places for people to get lost and stay lost. Debbie had called me a few times, and she apologized and wanted to know if she could come for a shower and a hot meal. One night when I was driving home from work I saw Debbie walking the street, I pulled over and had her get in the car and I took her home.

She looked like trash, and smelt like shame and cheap dollar store perfume, her her hair ratted and teased. My friend was nothing more than a dirty, ran down shell of a person. Her once long blond hair was cut short just below the ears, and was a tangled greasy and dirty. Here eyes were sunk in with dark circles around them. Her nose was slender and pointed. Her arms were long boney extensions of her withered torso, pocked marked with brown bumps and circles where she had used needles.

She begged and cried that she hadn’t eaten in a few days and wanted me to give her a place to stay for the night. Well she  came back to my place and showered up and put on one of my shirts and a pair of boxers. I didn’t recognize her, she was so thin. We talked about what she had been doing, and how she didn’t know what to do. I suggested that she go to the Atlanta Drug Rehabcenter. At first she was offensive about it, saying that she didn’t need rehab, that she just needed time to get off ‘that stuff’.

I told Debbie about Atlanta drug abuse rehab centers  and how they weren’t like those other places that was run down and full of trash, that they were friendly people who were serious about helping others in her place.

The next morning we got in the car and drove to the rehab center. When we arrived, it was like coming to a resort. It was a very warm open space, with people who greeted you as you walked in. We were taken on a guided tour of the facility, where we got to see all the different activities that guests were able to participate in. They made it clear that the programs offered were going to be challenging and were designed to make people challenge themselves and push past self imposed limitations. They even offered her counseling that would provide her with the tools to understand how to deal with her recovery and to get back on track to being the woman she use to be, but only better.

After some deliberation, Debbie checked herself into the center. When I went to visit her a few weeks later, I noticed that she had begun to look healthy again. Her eyes were not dark patchwork circles anymore, it looked to me as if she had gained some weight back. Her hair and nails were clean. She greeted me with a smile and open arms.

I attended one of her meeting, and when it came time for people to share their stories of addiction and their road to recovery Debbie’s hand shot up, and she began to recount the long road that she had been down and the hard road to recovery. Debbie has been clean almost 3 years now. I know that if it hadn’t been for the treatment center, my friend would have probably been dead by now.

She has since started school to become a Social Worker and is taking Addiction Counseling classes at Atlanta Community College and is working a steady job at Walmart and has a cute little apartment and has been doing well ever since.

Risk Of Bladder Cancer May Increase With Some Diabetes Drugs

An increased risk of bladder cancer is linked to the use of pioglitazone, a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, according to a new study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).
People with type 2 diabetes are at risk of several types of cancer, including a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer, compared to people without diabetes. Previous studies have shown a higher incidence of bladder cancer in people taking pioglitazone, a type of thiazolidinedione.
To determine whether there is a link between pioglitazone use and bladder cancer, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies involving over 2.6 million patients.
"We observed an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with the use of thiazolidinediones," writes Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, School of Public Health, University of Alberta, with coauthors. "In particular, use of pioglitazone was associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer based on a pooled estimate from three cohort studies involving more than 1.7 million individuals."
The researchers also looked at a possible association with rosiglitazone, another type of thiazolidinedione, but did not see an effect.
"Although the absolute risk of bladder cancer associated with pioglitazone was small, other evidence-based treatments for type 2 diabetes may be equally effective and do not carry a risk of cancer," conclude the authors. "This study quantifies the association between pioglitazone use and bladder cancer and may help inform decisions around safer use of pioglitazone in individuals with type 2 diabetes."

The First Step of a Thousand Miles

My family has serious issues with drug and alcohol addiction. Mary, my sister introduced the family to this dark world when she was 13. She thought that it would be fun to prove how grown up she was to all of her friends by drinking so much that she had to be rushed to the hospital to have her stomach pumped.
Of course mom and dad punished her by taking away her TV and phone privileges but that didn’t make Mary change any, the next party she went to she smoked Pot and drank.
Mary did the whole teen age rebellion thing. I got into a lot of fights at school because people talked about what a whore she was, and called her “2 drink Mary” because after two drinks she would have sex with you. Not something that you want to hear about your sister. I remember clearly graduation night, she went out to a party with her friends to celebrate, and tried meth for the first time. She wasn’t the same after that.
Our parents ended up kicking her out after they caught her stealing money from my moms jewelry box. In spite of what they both felt I know that it killed them to do so. Mary never stayed in the rehab centers. And taunted my parents with the song by Amy Winehouse “Rehab” always snickering as she would sing the chores “they said I need to go to rehab and I say No No No…” Over the course of a year and a half we would get word that Mr. Johnson would see Mary hanging out at the park with a bunch of guys, or Mrs. Wade saw her coming out of Lucky Times Pawn, but that was the extent of us hearing about her.

Atlanta is a large city with many places for people to get lost and stay lost. Mary had called home a few times, but my  parents just didn’t have it in them to talk to her. They would go on auto pilot until she hung up, and my mom would spend the better part of two hours crying. I was walking home from work at Burger Town and I heard a wispy voice call my name, it was Mary.
My once beautiful 5’8 blond hair blue eye sister was nothing more than a dirty, ran down shell of a person. Not the person I grew up with.

She begged and cried that she hadn't eaten in a few days and wanted me to give her a place to stay for the night. Well she  came back to my place and showered up and put on one of my shirts and a pair of boxers. I didn’t recognize her, she was so thin. We talked about what she had been doing, and how she didn’t know what to do. I suggested that she go to the Atlanta Drug Rehab center. At first she was offensive about it, saying that she didn’t need rehab, that she just needed time to get off ‘that stuff’.
My parents came over that next morning. I had called them after she had passed out on the couch. Mary was less than thrilled that they were there, saying that I was trying to set her up, and that she felt bullied and trapped. We told her Atlanta drug abuse rehab centers were not like those other places that was run down and full of trash, that they were friendly people who were serious about helping others in her place.

We all came to an agreement after a few hours of crying, that we would go as a family to visit the facilities and that if she still didn’t want to be there that we wouldn’t hold it against her and look for a new place or try a different means.
They even offered family counseling that would provide all of us with the tools to understand what Mary is and would be going through, and how to be there for each other not only as a family but as a support group.

After some deliberation, Mary checked herself into the center. We were told that she wouldn’t have contact with any one for at least two weeks.
When we went to visit her for our first counseling session, I noticed that she had begun to look like my sister again. Her eyes were not dark patchwork circles anymore, it looked to me as if she had gained some weight back. Her hair and nails were clean. She greeted us with a smile and open arms.

We sat through the family session and listened to what Mary had to say to us, as she worked through her steps. We all were crying but they were tears of relief. Mary has been clean almost 2 years now. I know that if it hadn’t been for the treatment center, my sister would have probably been dead by now. She has since started school for Addiction Counseling at Atlanta Community College and is working a steady job at the Pizza Hut a block over from our parents.

Diabetes Drug Shows Promise in Reducing Risk of Cancer, Study Suggests

An inexpensive drug that treats Type-2 diabetes has been shown to prevent a number of natural and human-made chemicals from stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells, according to a newly published study by a Michigan State University researcher.

The research, led by pediatrics professor James Trosko and colleagues from South Korea's Seoul National University, provides biological evidence for previously reported epidemiological surveys that long-term use of the drug metformin for Type-2 diabetes reduces the risk of diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast cancers.

"People with Type-2 diabetes are known to be at high risk for several diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast, liver and pancreatic cancers," said Trosko, a professor in the College of Human Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. "While metformin has been shown in population studies to reduce the risk of these cancers, there was no evidence of how it worked."

For the study, Trosko and colleagues focused on the concept that cancers originate from adult human stem cells and that there are many natural and human-made chemicals that enhance the growth of breast cancer cells.

Using culture dishes, they grew miniature human breast tumors, or mammospheres, that activated a certain stem cell gene (Oct4A). Then the mammospheres were exposed to natural estrogen -- a known growth factor and potential breast tumor promoter -- and human-made chemicals that are known to promote tumors or disrupt the endocrine system.

The team found that estrogen and the chemicals caused the mammospheres to increase in numbers and size. However, with metformin added, the numbers and size of the mammospheres were dramatically reduced. While each of the chemicals enhanced growth by different means, metformin seemed to be able to inhibit their stimulated growth in all cases.

"While future studies are needed to understand the exact mechanism by which metformin works to reduce the growth of breast cancers, this study reveals the need to determine if the drug might be used as a preventive drug and for individuals who have no indication of any existing cancers," he said.

"Though we still do not know the exact molecular mechanism by which it works, metformin seems to dramatically affect how estrogen and endocrine-disrupting chemicals cause the pre-existing breast cancers to grow."

In addition, further research needs to be done with human cultures to see if metformin can reduce the risk of pancreatic and liver cancers in Type-2 diabetics as well, he said.

AARP Pill Identifier

pillid

Just came across a great tool for identifying RX medications. I have the memory of kelp, and cant always remember what my meds are and I came across two pills that I wanted to know what they were and so I went to the Almighty Google and found the AARP Pill Identifier.
The good folks over at AARP have an extensive database filled with all the medications that are available here in the US.

I thought that I would pass this along for those of you who have the same problems that I do with memory.
