Gluco(M) Wristband Monitors Your Blood Glucose Levels

Ok So I just heard about this amazing product that is still in fabercation but is something that a Tech Geek like me wants. Its called Gluco(M) which is a wearable glucose monitor with a syring and insulin vile connected to it. I am way geeky over the idea of this thing. Here is what was said about it……

“With the widespread of diabetics among almost all range of people around, medical equipment manufacturers are introducing various products everyday. The Gluco(M) Wristband is a concept medicaldevice that offers three major functions to diabetics: non-invasive and instant glucose reading, storing previous readings history with averages, and an extremely useful insulin chamber with loaded syringe cartridge. This innovative product is featured with ‘Reverse Iontophoresis’ technology and collects glucose samples from body fluids by using an electric current flowing throughout the sensors. The readings are shown on the back-lit LED display and different required buttons for operating this device are placed at the edge of this device.

The Gluco(M) is a medical concept that provides diabetics with three functions: instant and non-invasive glucose readings, history of previous readings with averages, and an insulin chamber with a loaded syringe cartridge for injections.

Diabetics must monitor their own blood glucose levels times a day, to determine how far above or below normal their glucose is and to determine how much insulin(s) they may need. This is usually done by placing a drop of blood from a skin prick onto a glucose strip and then inserting the strip into a glucose meter, a small machine that provides a digital readout of the blood glucose level.

The Gluco(M) uses a technology known as “reverse iontophoresis.” By using an electric current running throughout the sensors, it collects glucose samples from fluids in the body. The device is then able to read the sample and give a reading. With this technology, diabetics can keep a much closer watch on their glucose levels and avoid the problems that may occurs from having levels too high or low. The Gluco(M) enables users with the convenience of checking blood-sugar levels more frequently throughout the day, thus yielding for better control of glucose in the blood stream.

Smartphone diabetes device launched

A new device launched in the UK will enable diabetics to manage their condition with a smartphone.

The £48 hi-tech glucose monitor, being rolled out at Boots stores, attaches to the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. It allows sufferers to check their blood sugar levels at any time using their phone or MP3 player.

The device, iBGStar, comes with a free Diabetes Manager App that makes it possible to store, track and analyze medical data.

Accurate monitoring of blood glucose is essential to the management of diabetes, which affects 2.9 million people in the UK. It is especially important for people with type-1 diabetes, an auto-immune disease that can lead to dangerous rises in blood sugar level.

High blood sugar can lead to serious complications including damage to the heart, kidneys, nerves and eyes.

Traditional blood glucose monitors (BGMs) are palm-sized devices that test tiny drops of blood obtained by pricking the skin.

iBGStar works the same way but is just one inch long and plugs straight into an iPhone or iPod touch. Software carries out the analysis and flashes the results onto the screen. It also allows users to follow changing trends and variations, and factors in information such as carbohydrate intake, insulin injections and exercise.

TV presenter Dominic Littlewood, who is helping to promote the device and was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes as a teenager, said: "I lead a hectic lifestyle and so keeping an eye on my blood glucose levels is challenging. iBGStar gives me the reassurance of knowing that I can get accurate blood glucose results using my iPhone, which I carry around anyway."

Sarah Johnson, from the type-1 diabetes research charity JDRF, said: "Good blood glucose control is vital to reducing the long-term effects of diabetes, but it can be difficult and demanding to achieve. As such, we welcome all developments in technology that can help people with type-1 and type-2 diabetes take control of their condition."

Dr Andrew Hockey, medical director for diabetes at the pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which produces the iBGStar, said the device was a "huge step forward". "It harnesses the power of the latest technology to empower people with diabetes to manage their condition on a day-to-day basis," he added.

The New Pogo Meter

I was told about the new Pogo Blood Glucose Meter by Intuity Medical today when I went in for a visit with my Diabetes Educator.

This little meter boasts to be the next big thing in the fight with Diabetes. Much like traditional meters, this one holds 500 tests in its memory, and has a drum for its testing.

What is unique is the fact that this meter is “All-in-One”. That’s right, this meter’s lancing device is built right in. You simply place your finger over the blue circle, and in four seconds you have your results.

This is suppose to make testing more of a snap, and discrete. Now I can see how this would be handy for some. But one of the biggest draw backs that I can see thusly is that there are only 10 tests per cartridge. Now maybe they’ll offer more when the machine is actually released here in the next couple of months when it get’s its FDA approval.

But I want more tests other than 10. If they could make a meter with a 50 or 100 drum then that would be totally sweet. But the manufactures are promising that this new guy will be cheaper and leave less of a dent on your wallet than its competitors.

Blood Testing Strips

Ok so I can’t be the only Diabetic in the world who has had this happen to them.

When you go to test and you don’t have enough blood, and you don’t realize this until you’ve already touched your finger to the strip, and the meter comes back with an error message meaning that there’s not enough blood.

You have just wasted that testing strip and now you have to use another one, cutting your supply down by one testing. These stupid things are expensive enough, why don’t they come out with a meter that can either test any amount of blood, or allow you to use the same strip?

I know it probably doesn’t happen a lot, but on those rare occasions that it does, I think it would be nice to have  a second chance.

Maybe I can reverse engineer a meter and a strip and make my own that can and will do this….ahhh the road to millions LOL!

Diabetic Meter Review

I have used several meters over the last two years, and I now have The Bayer ContourUSB and I love it.

My first meter when I got out of the hospital was an AccuCheck Advantage. It is a great little meter and has some great software for downloading your info to your computer. I would recommend this for someone who is not to techy, or needs/wants all the bells and whistles.

The next one I had was the OneTouch UltraMini which I love because of how small and easy it is to carry around with you, and all the colors it comes in. It also has some good software that you can get for it. I would recommend this meter for people on the go and for people who want a great portable monitor.

I then was given the new Bayer Didget which is the monitor for the Nintendo DS, which up until recently wasn't available here in the US. It is an ok meter, but really bulky and not really recommended for Adult use, unless your a gamer. The Didget website is based for children but does have useful software for you to use like a carb option counter and other things of that nature. I would recommend this meter for a child who is about 3-12.

As I have said, I have the Bayer ContourUSB which is by my opinion one of the best monitors on the market. It provides you with some great software that is Java based, so that it will work on any operating system.

It is USB so you can connect it to any USB plug you have. It doubles as a 500mb Thumb Drive which is a nice feature to have (I use it to hold my medical records on). And it also has a nice color LCD screen. There are two other features that I like about this meter, first being that the battery is rechargeable via USB or the USB to AC adapter that comes with the meter, and second being that you have easy access to the Tends in your blood sugar levels.

Now for me this feature alone was well worth it, because I could never really figure out how to check my trends with the other meters.

I would recommend this meter for anyone who is a little nerdy and wants a no hassle, straight forward meter.
