Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance - Review

Recently I watched Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and was HORRIBLY DISAPPOINTED!! Now I knew nothing of the film except for (and this is my own understand before watching) the movie was supposed to be based on the superhero Birdman from the 1960s show Birdman and the Galaxy Trio. Birdman was the main character of two out of three of the show's segments. This incarnation of Birdman was voiced by Keith Andies and did not use the name Harvey (Birdman's actual name was given in the show as Ray Randall). The original Birdman was a regular, non-comedic superhero with an eagle sidekick named Avenger. His powers came from the energy of the sun's rays, and he was able to fly using his wings.

This movie I thought would follow along the plot line of Harvey having been out of the superhero, crime fighting loop for awhile would re-adorn his suit (as shown here in a movie clip) and take back to fighting crime and become an "underdog" superhero movie. WRONG!!!

The movie billed as a comedy/drama left much to be laughed at. Instead the story follows Riggan Thomson's (Michael Keaton)  attempts to recover his family, his career and himself in the days leading up to the opening of a Broadway play, based on Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.
To me this movie was more about the staging of the play within a play, and less about Birdman himself. It was all the frustration of a has-been, washed up actor trying to recapture the glory of yesteryear.  With the production budget and the high-end Birdman Costume, and the star power of Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone, this movie could have been a power house likened to that of X-Men or Avengers. But instead this dribble was created.

I was and am very glad I didnt waste money on a ticket for this "movie" and that I got to view the screener copy for award consideration. I am not a film critic but I do not know nor understand what the buzz about this movie was. I just feel left wanting and wishing that there was something more.

Sketcher Shape Up Review

I got a pair of Sketcher's Shape Up's  yesterday and wore them for the first time today and I have fallen in love. Being a larger person and having arthritis, bad knees, and a bad lower back, I instantly noticed a difference the second I put them on.

Because of the unique shape of the sole and the lack of a heel, you are forced to stand, and walk differently in them. At first (before I got used to walking in them) I clomped like a horse. But once I learned to walk and balance in them I could feel them actually starting to work. I felt pressure where the arch of my foot should be (im so flat footed that you cant slip a piece of papers between my foot and the ground) I noticed a shift in the muscles in my gluts, my shins, and my back. I put them on at 1:00pm and took them off at 7:30pm and I did a significant amount of walking and never once felt pain in my lower back, nor my knees.

Though the minute I took them off and went to walk into the kitchen my knees started hurting again and i had instant pain in my lower back. So from 7 hours of no pain to slipping off the shoes and in pain, I almost want to lace them back up and live in them.

Im giving these shoes a 9 out of 10. I am scoring them this way because the price of the shoes keeps it from being affordable to everyone, but trust me, in my humble opinion, well worth the money.

Mary J Blige The London Sessions - Album Review

Mary has hit the studios once again and belts out a whole new sound for her. Being a lover of Mary J Blige I have to say The London Sessions is unexpected. The first few tracks start off slow and almost gospel. They take you through a more spiritual side and her opening up and saying "I dont need your permission."

As the album continues we get into a R&B Techno Dance Fusion, which when paired with her ineradicable voice, creates a whole new sound that is sure to bring in a new audience. I must say that I was expecting classic MJB but am extremely happy with this album. Its refreshing and on point.

Mary Lambert - Heart on my sleeve Album Review

I just got a copy of Mary Lambert's Heart on my Sleeve, this is one of the most heart felt and personalized, put all the cards on the table, albums I have heard in a while.

Brutal and honest, Mary sings from the heart about her ups and downs in life and most of all the emptiness she feels.
Each song is like a page from her diary. A no punches held look at what she keeps inside, and how he anguishes over her inability to properly communicate her feelings to those around and to her love interest.

Though the album is only 11 songs in total, you feel as if you are walking with her as she tells the story of her life. Powerful and moving, many times I was able to relate to her struggles of self worth, and just wanting to be loved.

Secrets - This is a very fun song about how she is depressed, bipolar, and how she really is tired of always having to hide secrets from everyone. She belts it out to tell the world, love me or leave me but this is who I am. It to me is a fun anthem that is likened to Lady GaGa's Born this way. Its a raw, in your face look at how no matter what the world says about you, that you need to be your own cheerleader and take a stand and be happy being you.

So Far Away - Laments the long distance between her and a love interest. How she wishes that they were back together and didnt have to be apart from one another saying "im a better person with you near...but you are so far away." Anyone who has ever had to be away from the person that they love or care about can truly understand this longing. I connected with it remembering a few of my past love interests who I am no longer in contact with.

Rib Cage - This song is about how she is open and exposed and how she feels that people take from her but never give back, and how she doesn't know how to fill the space left behind from people using her and walking all over her.  I myself dealing with depression and being bipolar feel this way more often than I'd like to admit to. The constant struggle of putting yourself out just to make others happy and the empty feeling you have at the end of the day.

Dear One - A personal sonnet to someone who she is in love with and feels at peace being around. It speaks of how she has a 'moth to a flame' need to be with this person but that they act as if she isnt alive. This resounded with me and helped me to connect with her and this song. Many times I have thought about just telling people how I feel only to not do so because of self doubt.

When you sleep - Asks the question so many of us wonder when we like someone, "do you think of me when Im not around?" She sings about the different scenario's in which they have the chance to think about her but if they ever did/do.  She takes it a step further by saying 'I could make a home and marry you and completely disappear" meaning (at least to me) that she would give up her whole self just to make this person happy if they would just only acknowledge her.

Chasing the Moon - A more upbeat song. this song is about escape and wanting to out run the problems and wanting to make the wonderful night last forever by "chasing the moon". This song reminded me of some of the great times that I've had with friends, and how it was so amazing that we all wished that it never had to end.

Jessie's Girl - This is a cover of the original song by Rick Springfeild but done in a more broken hearted, soulful way.

Monochromatic -This speaks about how emphatic she is and how she dreams in color but lives in a monochromatic world of pain. She sees it on the blank expressions of those she passes and feels that she is to vibrant to live in an emotionally dead city. It is a very interesting piece. It to me drums up imagery of walking through the slums.

Heart on my sleeve - The Album Namesake. Again she laments the unspoken thoughts, feelings, and desires she has for a love interest. She states in the song "when you opened your door, you opened what I had closed". To me this sounds like she let down her guard and allowed this person to come in.

Wounded Animal -  An apologetic Ballard of how she is sorry for not being more sympathetic for this persons break up and broken heart. But that basically she saw an opening and went for it and hoped for the best.

Sum of our parts -  In this song that builds to a rampant visualization of having to fight and become 'more than our scars....mare than the sum of our parts'. This is a song about rising from the ashes and not letting something keep you down.  Its about how far you've come regardless the pain of the past.

This album really is soulful and full of pain, regret, and strength. Anyone who has ever felt awkward growing up, or like the 3rd wheel, or just left out can relate to at least one of these songs. It is a close look at the pain she has harbored and a testament to the strength she has in order to push forward.

Glooko Rolling out new Bluetooth Connected Device

Glooko has been on the cutting edge of Diabetic technology since day one. They have set the bar and now others are frantically trying to follow in their blazing foot steps.
Recently Glooko sent me their MeterSync Blue, which is a meter connecting device that allows you to upload your meter readings via Bluetooth.

Having worked with Glooko in the Past I was excited to be able to test out the MeterSync Blue. I opened up my Glooko App and began syncing my meter.



As you can see from my glucose results my sugars run high. But I was really impressed with how quickly it synced. I have used the other cables that Glooko had come out with, but really like the fact that all you have to do is plug in your meter, push the button on the MeterSync Blue and all your info goes directly to your phone or Android/iOS device.

I am still not to thrilled about it being a 3 piece system like the Android version. I would have liked to see it be a more cohesive 2 piece system, that would closely resemble the iPhone sync cable system that is all one cord.

With it being a 3 piece system it seems like there is more room for you to lose some of the items you need in order to properly test. Another thing that you will notice between the MeterSync Blue and the original Android Sync cable is that they did away with the 3.5mm jack that you would have allowed you to plug the device directly into the meter and transmit that way. Had they kept the 3.5mm plug they could have just shipped the 2.5mm adapter that would have made it a 2 piece system and would save the company on production and shipping costs, and would have eliminated the need for the 3.5mm cord. However, that being said I must say that this is by far my most favorite of all the Glooko products. Being a fan of Bluetooth I love anything that can sync up using it.

My over all rating of the MeterSync Blue is 9.5 out of 10. Had they kept the 3.5mm plug and or made the additional 3.5mm cord part of the system and not a separate detachable I would have given it a 10. Testing new E-Juice from Vampire Vape and EShish

I just received some new Vape in the mail yesterday and I must say Im pretty impressed with these guys. My two E-Cigarette Juices came from Vape Club. I got Vampire Vape - Bat Juice, and EShish Strawberry and White Chocolate.

Vampire Vape - Bat Juice is a really fun and extra fruity blend that is very sweet and extremely smooth and produces a nice cloud.  Unlike most 60/40 blends the Propylene Glycol blend in this particular juice doesnt hurt your throat when you hit it. It leave a wondrous aftertaste an feels like it almost freshens your breath. It is very much a treat almost like a desert. I have the 0mg Nicotine one so I can not speak for the stronger Nicotine ones but I do really recommend this one if you like a sweet fruity blend.



The EShish - Strawberry and White Chocolate is a really aromatic and mildly sweet tasting e-juice. When you smell the bottle you can get the bold smell of the strawberry with a faint creamy hint of the white chocolate. But when you combine them to be vaped it comes out in a Strawberry Pop Tart flavor. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pop Tart's they are a pastry/biscuit that you cook in a toaster or you can eat raw.  It has a really nice throat hit that is nice and leaves a really nice after taste. It is not as sweet as the Vampire Vape - Bat Juice, but it is a really nice overall flavor. This one that I have is a 3mg Nicotine 80/20 blend. I can taste the nicotine in it as a very minimal note, but everything blends together really well. The cloud that it produces is nice and thick but in my opinion not as 'grand' as the Vampire Vape, I think that if reformulated with maybe less Propylene Glycol it might make it spot on.

Over all these two flavor profiles are really good. But for my personal choice I would have to go with Vampire Vape - Bat Juice. I like the super fruity profile of it. How it feels when inhaled and exhaled, and the sweetness/dessert like quality of it. The EShish is a really nice one that would be well paired if you happen to be drinking brandy or some other bold alcohol, or if you wanted something that wasnt to sweet but still had a nice candy like taste to it.

Ciglites cool crisp innovative

Recently a company called Ciglites contacted me with a chance to try out their e-cigarettes, and me being a sucker for product reviews I hopped on the offer.
Having done other e-cig reviews in the past I wasn’t to sure as to what to expect from this company as it seems that everyone has their own formulation.

I was happy to see the sleek sexy design of their packaging. To me I like having sharp looking items, it doesn’t matter what you are selling or marketing. So seeing how amazing these looked I was visually appeased by them.

 

Being like many other E products it was really simple and straight forward. Attach cartridge to battery, and draw. What I wasn’t ready for was the cool smooth tastes that came out, as well as the very impressive vape cloud. The intensity of the cloud made me feel like the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. I am not sure how they formulated their brand, but it wasn’t a throat hit like some of other products out there (or that I’ve tired.)

I am really super happy about them and love the fact that I have several other cartridges that I can enjoy. Reviewing the Vapourlites Blueberry/Strawberry E Juice

Hi everyone. So I was asked by the good folks over at Vapourlites to give their e-juice a try since I have done reviews for them in the past for their e-cigarettes, so naturally I agreed. 

Now I will be the first to be honest and tell you all that I have never used a refillable e-cigarette until today. I felt a bit ‘special’ when it came to filling it, if you know what I mean.

So once I figured out where to put the e-juice the next problem was getting the bottle open. It was super easy to figure out because well lets face it, I'm a guy and don’t read instructions. I also don’t read instructions as a general rule of thumb, especially if I'm going to do a review on something, because I was to see how intuitive the item is. Well this keyboard couldn’t be any easier to use and sync up with my device. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, and a Bluetooth radio for my laptop but I have yet to try and sync them with the keyboard, so for the sake of this review its going to be based on me using it with my Nook.

So right out of the box I went into my Nook’s settings and enabled the Bluetooth, and then turned the power on my keyboard and pushed the connect button. Within 5 seconds my Nook had detected it and with a push of the icon on screen and entering the pairing numbers it was synced. I downloaded Android Open Office and started typing away. Now the keyboard itself is full Qwerty and sports 65 keys including a Function key that allows for other functions to be used on the keyboard too. The keyboard has the ability to control a media player, open a web browser, has a home button for PC/Mac/Android, full number keys, full F keys, page up/down, home and end, etc. Bluetooth 3.0, built in rechargeable lithium batter, 44hr work time, 30 day standby, 2hr charging, up to 30ft function, micro0USB interface, a protective case that doubles as a stand, and energy saver mode.

The one thing that I don’t like is how close the keys are to each other and I have big hands and some of the button placement is going to take some time getting used to but all in all I am very happy with it. The board itself is made out of aluminum and is pretty stable once you place it on a table or what have you. It doesn’t feel really flimsy but isnt completely solid either. When you are using it on a table its just like any other keyboard in its solid performance, but holding it you can kinda bend it a little, and if you were not careful and over extended it, could break it. But with normal adult use I think this is going to be the start of a beautiful friendship. I also like the fact that it came in different colors, like blue and white, black and white, and this fun red and black zebra print.

Also as mentioned above the case doubles as a holder for your phone, or tablet. The one thing that I don’t like about the case/stand is that it is plastic. I would like to have seen it be metal, but again with proper handling it should be fine.

All in all I give this product a 8 out of 10 stars. I would have liked to see the stand/case be made out of metal, and able to house a tablet with a case in the main groove. However, there is a little tray that can be extended that you could place your tablet in but for the set up as shown below, you can not hold a tablet and a tablet case in the slot. Other than that this is a sweet set up. I purchased mine from Newegg.com for $40.00 + shipping. The other thing that I didn’t like is there is no way to register this product, but it does come with a limited 90-day warranty so I guess that is good?

Reviewing the Nook Tablet BNTV400

So a few weeks ago I purchased myself a Nook for my birthday. I already have a Kindle Fire, but wanted something different as the USB power adapter is tweaked on it.
At first I wasn’t sure if I would even use the Nook, but have found that I take it everywhere. I love the lite weight design of it and how comfortable it is to use. It has taken me a while to get use to the over all layout and learning the different functions of it. The one thing that I have not yet figured out is how to side load things on to it, but I have a friend who is going to show me how to do that, so I can install 3rd party software and downloaded books and movies on to it.

These Nooks come in different sizes, and the one that I got myself was the 16gb, and I got a 32gb micro SD card for added room. The other thing that I really liked about the Nook is that it supports Bluetooth, which is amazing to me. I have just recently learned the powers of Bluetooth and am obsessed with it. Up until now the only Bluetooth thing that I has was my Motorola H350 and H500 ear bugs.

The other thing that I love about the Nook is the battery life. I can play my games, access the web, and watch a movie all for about 4 hours before having to plug it in to charge. The quick charge feature is something else that I enjoy. Some of the things that I find annoying about the Nook is that its not really intuitive. Like most guys I dig something out of the box and I want to use it right then and there and well it takes a moment to do so (at least in my opinion).
It would have been nice to see a more powerful control panel and more customizable options, but for the average user its probably fine.
I recently bought a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and as soon as they come I am planning on rooting it and turning it into a fully functioning android tablet.

All in all this is a great little tablet/e-reader and is good for the price. I have to say that I do like it better than my Kindle Fire because of the weight, but in terms or being able to fully customize it without some geek knowledge on a scale of 1-10 I give it a 4.
If you plan on watching movies or streaming on this, its really amazing for that, however the 2 built in speakers leave something to be desired, as their sound range isnt that great with Netflix and other videos I’ve streamed. However, they seem to be amazing when running games and apps. Even with an external speaker hooked to it, I still have trouble listening to whats playing.

Vapourlites

 

Recently I was contacted by the maker Vapourlites and was asked to do a review on them. With the new sensation of e-cigarettes this was something that I was happy to do.

I am a social smoker and do not care for the traditional cig, but have found that I am really loving the freedom but not the taste of some e-cigarettes. To me, most e-cigarettes taste very chemically and have an unpleasant taste, even when supposed to be flavored. This is not the case with Vapourlites.
The one’s that I was sent to try out were the menthol version. On first puff I was delighted to feel and taste the difference. The menthol was almost berry flavored, it was light, and not irritating to my lungs at all. Now mind you like I said I am a social smoker so any bit of smoking typically hurts my lungs. But not these.

I was also delighted in the fact that I was sent what is called a micro e-cigarette. It is half the size of a regular cig but with the same quality flavor but even more discreet. I also like the fact that you can buy refill kits that are the equlivant of 100 cigarettes for less than 3 packs of traditional cigarettes, and that the refill kits come in a variety of flavors.

But how do Vapourlites work?
