Web-Based Software

  1. AIDA On-Line
AIDA On-line offers the opportunity to simulate the effects of changes in insulin and diet on the blood glucose profile of a "virtual diabetic patient." You can run simulations without charge in your Web browser window. The simulator allows you to see the effect of changes in insulin and diet on the blood glucose profile of example patients with diabetes. AIDA On-line provides 40 case scenarios with different problems to be solved by interactively simulating the "virtual diabetic patient." Users can add more cases. The approach is not intended for individual patient glycemic prediction or therapy planning, but is offered as an interactive educational/self-learning tool. A downloadable version of the simulator is also available and is linked above in the "Shareware and Freeware Windows Software" and "MS-DOS Software" sections. The URL for AIDA On-line is
http://www.2aida.org/online. The AIDA U.S. mirror site can be accessed at http://www.2aida.net/online.

    Insulin Dose Calculators

    New August 20, 2010:

    • The “G+ Enterprise System" is an “Insulin Dosing Software and Glycemic Management System.”  Visit their website: www.glytecsystems.com  for further information on the software.  “G+ Enterprise System" has received FDA clearance.

      New November 24, 2009:

    • Predicting short-term blood sugar levels for someone who has type 1 diabetes poses no theoretical problems. You can keep records of the meals that you eat through the day and the amount of insulin you inject. You can translate these records into the amounts by which blood glucose levels are elevated by the meals and lowered by the injections. You can personalize the rises and falls of your blood glucose by knowing how you respond to particular foods and insulins. Then, occasional blood glucose test result can provide a datum level on which to base the calculations of where the blood glucose will stabilize when all the food has been digested and insulin activity ceases. You can obtain blood glucose predictions by using manual methods with, for example, a paper log of daily events and a calculator. But this approach is time consuming, repetitive, prone to errors, and very difficult to implement. A much better method is to use a computer program to take in the details of each event and fit the program use your profile to calculate how your blood glucose is likely to change and where it will stabilize. The software could also indicate how much more carbohydrate you should eat or how much insulin you should inject to stabilize the you blood glucose at, or slightly above, 5 mmol/l. Pathfinder is a PC application that does all of these things. A person with diabetes can quickly set up a personal profile on day 1. Then, you enter inputs of daily events in sequence. When required, it will show the results of its calculations in two ways: First a table showing predicted blood glucose levels over the next four hours or so, and second an indication of how much you should eat or inject to stabilize your the blood glucose level at 5 mmol/l. You can find full details at http://www.pathfinderweb.talktalk.net and get further help and information from The Pathfinder Team at pathfinderemail@talktalk.net.

    20. NutriSoft sells three similar programs that sound good, but none of them can be recommended for people with diabetes who want to use software to track how their medications and/or insulin, exercise, diet, weight, and state of health affect their blood glucose levels. None of these programs have anything but the most basic blood glucose tracking, and all of them require you to enter your blood glucose levels manually. NutriGenie makes versions of its programs available on-line at many sites, but all of those for diabetes management are severely crippled (they have limited databases and permit nothing to be saved). Perhaps an even more serious criticism of NutriGenie's products is that the company is essentially unreachable. It does not provide a street address, only a post office box number. It does not provide a telephone number, whether toll-free or local. It has three e-mail addresses (nutrigenie@yahoo.com, NutriSoft@aol.com, and 71563.124@compuserve.com, but e-mail directed to any of these addresses goes unanswered.

    iPhone/iPod Touch Applications

New applications for the iPhone -- which also run on the iPod Touch -- are so plentiful that I can't keep up with all of them. Searching the App store of the iTunes store for "diabetes" on October 29, 2009, returned about 90 apps. Please let me know of useful apps that you make or use.

      New April 23, 2009

    3. Glucose Buddy and Glucose Buddy Lite
Glucose Buddy and Glucose Buddy Lite from oneApOneCause are applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Both applications are now free.

With Glucose Buddy you can monitor your glucose and activity levels as well as carbohydrate and medicine intakes. All log entries can be edited with detailed notes and also graphed for a visual representation. Up to 60 days worth of glucose log entries are graphed -- highs, lows, averages, and saving a snapshot of it is just as easy as a click of a button. Some of the updates soon to be added is an interactive website to sync with your mobile phone's Glucose Buddy, more statistical analysis, graphing options, and e-mailing capabilities. The URL is
      http://www.oneapponecause.com/

Please note this comment from my correspondent Mary Downs: "I tried Glucose Buddy, but found that data entry involved a great many 'clicks,' as it were. The final straw for me was when I could not edit a prior entry to correct a severe typo."

    4. ResQr Diabetic Coach

      Added January 22, 2010:

    5. Islet
Correspondent Mary Downs recommends this ap. "I read about the developer that won a $100,000 award in a software competition. His app is called Islet.

"Entering data using Islet is very fast and very easy. You can also enter food and activity, but those records are very basic, i.e., food is simply the number of grams of carbs, but not what or how much. You can easily add or edit records later. The collected records can then be either emailed or synced. I have used the email, and you get a nice CSV that can be imported into anything. There is also a file syncing mechanism that I haven't tried. Of course, with the iPod Touch either syncing method requires you to be in a WiFi zone. Islet does cost $2.99, but I feel it was well worth it."

      Added September 21, 2009:

    6. WaveSense Diabetes Manager
The WaveSense Diabetes Manager is an iPhone/iPod Touch app. The first version is a digital logbook. You can enter glucose, carb, and insulin data, just like you would with a paper logbook. However, the app puts everything into a clean format, helps you add tags and notes to your results, and utilizes the data capabilities of the iPhone or iPod Touch to share info with your health care team or family. The next version is in progress and will automate the data entry process freeing people up to review and better understand their numbers. It is available now at the iTunes store at http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=325292586&mt=8

      Platform-Independent Software

      1. GNU Gluco Control
GNU Gluco Control is software that can help you manage your diabetes. You have the possibility then to add, change, view data, view data graphicaly through graphs (still work in progress), or print data out to printer. In previous version (that was 0.3, it is now at version 0.4) they integrated the first version of Meter Tool, which is now fully developed and support several devices (the whole Ascensia/Bayer family, the Roche/Accu-Chek family, and some of the LifeScan OneTouch devices). It also now works on Pump Tool, which in its current version only has the possibility of manually adding data (automatic importing is coming). Since this is an open source application (written in Java), the developers tell me that they need all the help then can get, including testers/users, translators, and if someone is brave enough, also developers (either in Java or C#). glucose, diabetes, diabetic, software, free

SoundTells Glucose Tracker. This is by far my favorite program. I use it daily to track my blood sugar levels, and there is so much you can do with it.

You can input your sugar levels, how you are feeling, what time of day it is (ie before or after a meal) and even input your own comments. You can also compare your charts in a 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 180 day format. It can even compare your charts for up to 10 years.

Another really cool thing is that you can print all of this information and give it to your doctors or just store it with your medical records. This program has two versions, free (ad supported) or paid $19.99. I personally use the free version, the ad's just pop up in a browser window which can be minimized. Click Here to get your own copy of SoundTells Glucose Tracker. If you do use this program please leave me a comment about how you like it!

weight management, weight loss, help, tracker, free, software, soundtells

SoundTells makes another great piece of software called Weight Tracker. This has the same features as Glucose Tracker, but with one limitation that I can see so far, and mind you I've only been using it for a few days at the time of posting this on 8/21/2010. It only allows for you to select a base weight of 400 lbs.

We for me personally I weight 431 (again at the time of this posting) so for me this software isn't to grand as it will not accurately portray my needs. But for others it's a great thing. It has the same basic interface as Glucose Tracker, so once you've used one you can use the other. To get your own copy of SoundTells Weight Tracker Click Here. As far as I can tell this software works just like Glucose Tracker, as in its free (ad supported) or Paid ($19.99)

This is Subliminal Blaster. It is a pretty great little program. I have been using it for 2 days at the time of posting this (8/21/2010) and like it so far.

What this software does is it flashes little messages on the screen that is supposed to activate that feeling in your sub-conscience. There are a pre-made list of messages that you can use that range from being a great parent to weight loss.

Now at first I was a little scared to use this program because I didn’t know what the messages where going to say, and I didn’t want to go out and kill someone because my computer told me to. It allows you to customize each message, and delete the the things that you don’t want to so up. It run's on your computer and flashes the messages quickly. It can be a bit annoying but so far I am loving it. I have it programmed to send me positive reinforcing messages like, "I am doing a good job", "I am losing weight", "I do not want junk food". I know its working because I can feel a slight headache when I am using my computer now, where I never did before. This program is free and can be downloaded by clicking here.
