The Panera Bread in northeast Portland will soon turn into the company’s third pay-as-you-can cafe, according to a restaurant spokesperson.
The Hollywood restaurant at 4143 NE Halsey Street will close Tuesday night and reopen Jan. 16 as a nonprofit named Panera Cares Community Cafe. The new restaurant will have suggested donation prices and donation bins, according to the company.
The goal of the program is to make sure everyone who needs a meal gets one. Two other Panera pay-as-you-can cafes have opened up around the country over the past year.
According to officials, 60 to 70 percent of the customers at the first two cafes pay in full. Another 15 percent pay more and 15 percent pay less or nothing
