Glooko Under the Hood

 
Ok so I have had the chance to download my copy of Glooko and test it out.
Right out of the box you are faced with a verity of options from syncing your meter, to adding notes about that reading.

At the bottom of the screen we find four options being Home, History, Opinions, and Settings. Home, History and Settings  are pretty self explanatory, but what leaves me puzzled is Opinions area.

Looking at this area is a bit of a head scratcher,because at first you are introduced with things that have nothing to do with Diabetes nor the function of the App itself, but what looks to be random headlines from a News Agitator.

Then as you begin to scroll down you find information about Diabetes in a blogosphere feed, which I am assuming is a means to bring you the latest information about developments in treatment and diagnosis of Diabetes and current news within the D Community. But really I don’t see the need for this feature unless the developers of Glooko are thinking about creating a Diabetic Community forum/blog/social network area  like TuDiabetes.org or something of that nature, which would be handy to connect other Glooko users together.

In the settings area you have many features that you would expect with the added feature to buy another MeterSync Cable from Glooko’s Amazon Store, which could be handy should you need a replacement. Also you have a Feedback section takes you to an e-mail form where it gives information about your phone, the Glooko version, the iOS version, and the Current Meter that you are using. All of which are important features when you are new to the game, and really don’t know any of the details about your meter and what have you.

The list of supported meters are only a few, but from what the company says that will change in the future, right now the App supports the most popular brands. Many of which you can get for free if you Google them, or depending on your insurance you may be able to obtain one through your Doctor or Diabetes Educator.

All in all I have to say that so far I love this App and hope that it will stay in the forefront of my Diabetes Management. I will report back in a week.

Low Income Cell Phone “Obama Phone” Update

Ok so after having been a customer and user of the “Obama Phone” / Cell Phone for Low Income people plan I have a little something to say.

In order from the picture to the left we have Assurance Wireless Keyocera Jax by Virgin Mobil, Yourtel’s LG Rumor, and SafeLink’s Wireless LG 300g.

Assurance Wireless

I am scoring Assurance Wireless 1.5 because of their customer service which is outsourced to India, and is really lacking in ability to help. The phone is a good phone for storing numbers in, but not much more than that.

When making a call (if you can get a signal and keep it) the sound quality is good, but it lacks in volume. The highest it goes still in most cases makes it hard to hear the other person. The battery on this phone drains out really fast making it impossible to do much without lugging your charger around with you, and with some of them (this being my 5th phone with them) they will randomly shut off for no reason.

This is a good phone for a backup that you are not relying to heavily on.
Delivery time for this phone about 1 week.

YourTel

I am scoring Yourtel with 3.5 stars because of the phone that they send you. The phone is so far the best part of this companies dealings. It runs on the Sprint network which gives you some good coverage, and has a full QWERTY keyboard, and a memory card slot, USB connection, Bluetooth, and a 1.3mpx camera.
So far this phone and its service has been ok, though I have had one strange thing happen to me. When I was at my sisters who only lives about 2 miles away the phone went into roaming (an archaic feature I thought was long since gone) and would not allow me to make any calls. The other draw back with this company is that they have yet to establish mobile internet yet, though the phone is capable of doing so. All in all a real awesome phone.

Safelink Wireless

This was my very first phone and I still love the little guy. It is a basic Tracfone LG 300G but it is a sturdy phone. The customer service is partially outsourced to India, but the coverage that I get with this phone is excellent. I have only found 3 times that I haven’t been able to get coverage.
The customer service is excellent though it is outsourced. The only problem that I have had with the phone is that sometimes the monthly minutes will not automatically post to it and you have to call in and enter a football field amount of coding to get it up and working.

The phone has no bells and whistles but what it lacks in the goodies, it makes up for in the coverage and the durability.

Glucofacts updated and 100% better

I just downloaded the latest version of Glucofacts for the Bayer Contour USB, and I am seriously pleased to “say that its about dang time!”

I never have been able to use the program that came preinstalled on the meter, but today when I was charging it a pop-up asked if I wanted to download the update, I was like sure what the heck.
I was able to fully download all of my readings, trends, and more. Though I will go on record by saying that I did have a bit of a problem at first, but a few times of unplugging it and plugging it back it was fixed.
So now I am looking forward to using the program.

Site Review : Priceangels.com

  Ok so anyone who has been a reader of my blog has come to know me as a frugal person who is constantly looking for a deal, and that I am a tech geek. Well I came across the site www.priceangels.com while looking for some new toys to play with (gotta love tax season).

Well on Priceangels.com I found that they have everything that a geek like me could ever want. They carry products from Android Tablets to Wii accessories. Now I have a Wii and have been needing a new controller and found an OEM Wii Controller there for under $20 which is a steal if you have ever priced them at Wal-Mart or other places like that.

I just wanted to let all my readers know about this site as they carry many items that are great stocking stuffers, as well as last minute presents for birthday’s or anniversaries.

Great New Way to Save some Money!

So I have come across one of the best money saving sites ever. Its called Eyebuydirect.com they specialize in helping people get perscription eye glasses for as low as $7.95.

All you do is visit their website and then chose the style of frames starting at $7.95 – $45, then you add on additional options like bifocal and tinting and what have you. Then after you have it all situated how you want you enter in your prescription and within 7 business days they ship you out a brand new pair of glasses, with protective case and microfiber cloth.

At first I thought that they were going to have a crappy ‘welfare’ frame selection, but was surprised to find that they had a pair of Flexlite frames which my Optormotist was going to charge me $475, they had the same exact pair for the $7.95, with shipping and everything it was just under $13.00.

I highly recommend them for anyone who may have limited income, and need to have new glasses. The best and cheapest way that I have found to get your prescription is to go to Wal-Mart and have them do their $50 eye exam around September Back to School time is when you can get the best deals on this. Then hit up that site. I am not being paid to blog about this, they are someone that  I’ve used and really stand behind them 100%

Glucose Buddy for iPhone

I downloaded Glucose Buddy for the iPhone and have been using it for about 2 weeks now. I like it for its simple interface, however, wish that the keyboard would disappear faster, as it has a tendency to be in the way when you are trying to input some of your information.

Also if paired with an Accu-check meter, you can compare your readings online, which is a good feature for anyone who is on the go.

for a free app it does have a lot of features and has been the best thus far that I have found in keeping my records. Another thing that I found about this progam is that you can not enter a weight over 350 lbs, which is something that I do not like as I am heavier than that. But otherwise it’s a really great program and I would suggest it to anyone who wants an easy to use program.

I got a MedFlash today and it has got to be one of the the most niftiest gadgets I have ever gotten.

The New Pogo Meter

I was told about the new Pogo Blood Glucose Meter by Intuity Medical today when I went in for a visit with my Diabetes Educator.

This little meter boasts to be the next big thing in the fight with Diabetes. Much like traditional meters, this one holds 500 tests in its memory, and has a drum for its testing.

What is unique is the fact that this meter is “All-in-One”. That’s right, this meter’s lancing device is built right in. You simply place your finger over the blue circle, and in four seconds you have your results.

This is suppose to make testing more of a snap, and discrete. Now I can see how this would be handy for some. But one of the biggest draw backs that I can see thusly is that there are only 10 tests per cartridge. Now maybe they’ll offer more when the machine is actually released here in the next couple of months when it get’s its FDA approval.

But I want more tests other than 10. If they could make a meter with a 50 or 100 drum then that would be totally sweet. But the manufactures are promising that this new guy will be cheaper and leave less of a dent on your wallet than its competitors.
